If a player can arrange their cards to form a meld, they can play it onto the table after drawing a card. All the cards in a meld are played at once.
Melds can be either a Run or a Set. A Run is a consecutive sequence of cards in a single suit. A Set is a grouping of differently-suited cards of the same number.
The player is not required to play their melds at the first available opportunity. Even if a player has cards that can be played, they may still choose to discard and end their turn. This happens frequently when players attempt to go Rummy and plan to play their entire hand in a single turn.
