Goal
The goal of Euchre is to be the first team to reach 10 points by winning tricks. A trick is won by playing the highest card of the suit that was led, or by playing a trump card. The trump suit is determined at the beginning of each round.
Card Values
Euchre is played with a 24-card deck consisting of Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, 10s, and 9s in each of the four suits. The Jacks are the most powerful cards in the trump suit: the Jack of the trump suit is the highest card, followed by the Jack of the same color in the other suit. The remaining cards in the trump suit follow in descending order: Ace, King, Queen, 10, and 9. Cards in non-trump suits are valued in their usual order: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, and 9.
Bidding
Bidding in Euchre begins after the top card of the undealt pack is turned face up. Players, starting with the player to the left of the dealer, have the option to either "MAKE" the upcard card, making its suit the trump, or to pass. If all players pass, a second round of bidding occurs where players can name a different suit as trump, or pass again. If all pass a second time, the dealer is forced to pick a trump suit.
Play
Play begins with the player to the left of the dealer leading any card. The other players must follow suit if possible. If they cannot follow suit, they may play a trump card or any other card. The trick is won by the highest card of the suit led, unless a trump card is played, in which case the highest trump card wins the trick. The winner of each trick leads the next one. The team that wins at least three out of five tricks in a round scores points.
Scoring
If the team that declared trump (the "makers") wins three or four tricks, they score 1 point.
Marched Opponent - If the makers win all five tricks, they score 2 points.
Euchred Opponent - If the opposing team (the "defenders") wins three or more tricks, they score 2 points, and the makers score 0.
Going Alone - If a player decides to go alone without their partner and wins all five tricks, their team scores 4 points.
In The Barn - If a team is 1 point away from winning they are “In the Barn”
Winning the Game
Winner - The first team to reach 10 points wins the game.
