Crib Strategy
Keep track of who has the Crib in each round! Since each Crib consists of four cards (two submitted from each player) it is essentially an additional hand of cards that can be scored at the end of the crib owner's turn. By understanding which player the Crib belongs to, players can strategize by giving their opponent lesser valuable cards for scoring.
Card Selection
Selecting the right cards to keep in your hand and which to send to the Crib is foundational in Cribbage. Generally, aim to keep pairs, runs, or combinations that sum to 15, as these will score points during the play & show phases. Be wary of breaking up potential runs or 15s unless you can form a better scoring combination. When deciding cards for the Crib, non-dealers should avoid giving away pairs, sequences, or fifteens that could benefit the dealer.
Counting Points
Mastering point counting during both the play and the show is crucial. Remember, every combination of cards that totals 15 scores two points, pairs are worth two points, runs score one point per card, and a flush in your hand scores four points (if all four cards in hand are the same suit), plus one additional point if the starter card is also the same suit.
Play Phase
The play phase is a dynamic aspect of Cribbage that requires quick thinking and strategic card play. During this phase, aim to control the flow of play to either prevent your opponent from scoring or to set yourself up for points. For instance, playing a 6 when your opponent just played a 9 can prevent them from scoring a pair or reaching 15.
Strategic Leading
The first card you play in the play phase can set the tone for scoring. Leading with a low card from a pair or a card that starts a sequence can lure out valuable cards from your opponent while setting yourself up for potential points. Consider what cards your opponent has played to anticipate their strategy.
Managing Your Hand
Keep track of the cards that have been played, particularly the cards from your own hand and the cuts from previous rounds. This knowledge can give you insight into what your opponent might be holding and guide your decisions in both the play and show phases.
Defensive Play
If you're ahead, play more defensively by avoiding risky moves that could open up scoring opportunities for your opponent. Conversely, if you're trailing, you might need to take more risks to catch up. In the play phase, this might mean holding back on playing cards that could set up your opponent for points.
The Starter Card
The starter card can dramatically influence the scoring in a round. After the starter is revealed, reassess your hand and crib potential based on this new card. A starter card that matches in rank or suit with your hand or crib can significantly increase your scoring potential.
Reading the Board
Always be aware of the board position. Knowing how many points you and your opponent need to win can influence your strategy, especially near the end of the game. If you are close to winning, you might choose safer plays or even hold back certain cards to avoid setting up your opponent during the play phase.
